Case Study - Transforming public transort in the UK with Paper Roll Ticketing

|   Projects

We’re excited to share our latest case study, showcasing how Greater Anglia, in partnership with Scheidt & Bachmann and the Rail Delivery Group, modernised ticketing with our Paper Roll Ticketing (PRT) solution in the UK . Our barcode-based PRT technology supports the UK National Rail to move away from traditional magstripe ticketing - all while maximising ticket capacity, reducing operating costs and enabling wider efficiencies across the industry.

The project began with a three-month trial in 2023, upgrading 20 FareGo ST|71 ticket vending machines (TVM) to support dual printing of both traditional magnetic stripe tickets and recyclable PRT tickets.

Highlights of the trial and subsequent roll out include:

  • Zero printer failures during the trial, delivering uninterrupted service
  • 86% of tickets now printed on fully recyclable paper instead of legacy media, which means a measurably reduced environmental impact
  • 90% more ticket stock capacity per roll cutting refills and maintenance costs

Following the trial’s success, we began expanding our PRT solution to an additional194 TVMs across Greater Anglia’s network.
